Ian to Receive “World of Good” Award

‘Vampire Diaries’ star Ian Somerhalder is winning an award! Yep, Ian set to receive the ‘World of Good’ award at the Carmel Art and Film Festival later this month. So, how did Somerhalder win this award?

The actor has been named the first ever recipient of honor. Ok, so a first annual ‘World of Good’ isn’t nearly as prestigious as a lifetime achievement award or the Nobel peace prize, but at least Ian Somerhalder is being recognized for his work.

The award, sponsored by Tiffany jewelry, is given to “an influential actor, filmmaker or artist who is using their notoriety to ‘do good work.’”

So, what ‘good work’ has Ian Somerhalder done? He has been immersed in the ‘green’ movement, being quite vocal about getting his young fans involved in environmental initiatives. It is Somerhalder’s use of social media that helps connect with his young, but technically adept audience.

It was just this past Monday (October 3) where he tweeted about his disgust over animal abuse of cats and dogs in the Ukraine.

You’ve GOT to be kidding me- what year are we in? This needs to stop Ukraine!

This is just one example of many for the award-winning Ian Somerhalder. Will he continue to use his high-profile as an actor to try to make a difference? Most likely, he will try to keep using his influence over his young fans to effect a change in the way people look at and treat the environment. At least this is what the Tiffany Co. sees in awarding him the ‘World of Good’ honor.

“Vampire Diaries” Star Ian Somerhalder Throws a Party and You’re Invited

Want to party with Damon Salvatore? Yeah, we thought so.

“The Vampire Diaries”
bad boy Ian Somerhalder is throwing a Halloween bash in Atlanta this fall, and he’s inviting all his fans to join in the fun. The Empoweresque party, a burlesque-themed costume ball, will benefit the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.

If you don’t already know all about Somerhalder’s environmentally focused organization, you can read more about its goals and prerogatives here. The IS Foundation focuses on a wide variety of causes – species like leatherback turtles in danger of extinction, ecosystems threatened by oil spills, and funding green energy initiatives.

While that may be some somber stuff, Somerhalder has decided to throw a party that’s about celebrating the planet and moving forward positively, not mourning the damage done. “I want to make this fun,” he tells Zap2it. “Yeah, there are some serious issues at hand, but what better way to celebrate the changes that our generation is going to make than to throw a party? There’s no reason to be all doom-and-gloom. Let’s dance. Let’s celebrate good will and initiative and people coming together to make change. That’s what ISF is about.”

Given the largely female fanbase of “The Vampire Diaries,” the party’s theme was chosen in the hopes of celebrating the power women have to change the world — but the ISF reps assure us that the party will be totally guy-friendly, too.

Expect surprise celebrity guests (yes, several of Somerhalder’s “TVD” co-stars have confirmed that they’ll be there), hot music, prize giveaways, and of course, the rare opportunity to see Somerhalder let loose on the dance floor. (Trust us… you don’t want to miss it.) This isn’t going to be a few streamers in a high school gym, vamp fans — ISF is going all out, so expect a glamorous evening.

“We’re going to blow it up,” Somerhalder teases. “It’s going to be a blast.”

You can get your tickets at the ISF website – and just remember, all the proceeds will go directly to saving the world, Somerhalder-style. You can also find information about discounted hotel rates in case you’re not Atlanta-based. (Or if you just want to make sure you don’t have to drive home after the festivities! Play safe!)

“When you hear a remix of a great song, it’s not reinventing the wheel, but it’s taking something familiar, remixing it, and making it cool again,” he says. “That’s what we want to do with this party. We want to take the idea of a benefit and light it up. It’s about getting all these young, inspired, awesome people into a room, and turning up the music.”

If you can’t make it out to the party but you still want to support the cause, here’s one very easy way to do it. Somerhalder has started a petition to stop the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, an oil pipeline in the works to transport the toxic material all the way from Alberta to the Texas Gulf coast. You can read all about the dangers of the highly faulty pipeline system which would expose countless towns to horrific toxins right here at the petition site. Somerhalder is urging fans to sign it, to call on President Obama to prioritize climate change and clean energy and stop the Keystone pipeline.

Vampire Diaries Ian Somerhalder Wants A Nobel Prize

When it comes to awards, you’d think a hottie actor like Ian Somerhalder would be hoping to score an Emmy, Golden Globe or even an Oscar.

But no. The Vampire Diaries star wants a Nobel Prize.

Oh, really? We’ll let him explain…

“When we wrapped [Vampire Diaries] April 18, I flew to Zimbabwe where I was doing a documentary,” Somerhalder told us at the Teen Choice Awards in L.A.

“I met a scientist named Allan Savory,” he continued. “He’s figured out a way to reverse climate change, literally through agriculture. So I’m directing this documentary about him with Geoff Shotz, our camera director on Vampire Diaries…The goal of the movie is to win Allan Savory a Nobel Prize for agriculture, which has never been done.”

Somerhalder, who testified before Congress last month about wildlife conservation, is even set to interview former president Jimmy Carter for the Savory doc.

“You look at things like An Inconvenient Truth, which Al Gore did, it never once mentions [how] agriculture contributes more to climate change than anything else in the world,” he said. “It makes me crazy to think about, so we’re going to change that.”

Sen. Somerhalder, anyone?

“I’m never running for office,” he said. “I just love this part of it. I love being able to speak to members of Congress or members of the Senate and floating on either side, because it takes all of us. It’s going to take both of them.”

Hmm, perhaps Somerhalder could help with that debt ceiling, too.
